Show Dog Grooming
Show dog grooming is a little different from normal grooming. These dogs represent the best of their breed and must be groomed to show their assets to the best advantage. If you have ever been behind the scenes at a dog shows, you know that getting the dog ready for the ring is quite a production. Amid portable grooming tables, tack boxes, and crates, the show dog is prepped to perfection. Once that is accomplished you have to keep them looking perfect. There are show coats to wear and keep the coat clean, topnot pillows, to keep that pouffy poodle head, well pouffy, and booties for the feet.
You will need a lot of supplies, hence the tack box. A tack box will keep them neatly organized and in reach. Be sure you have shampoo, conditioner, finishing sprays, nail trimmers, eye and ear cleaners. You will need clippers, scissors, and a hair dryer as well. That tack box will be full in no time. Small things like hair bands are good to have. There are also bands made specifically to place over the ears to drown out the sound of clippers for the nervous dog. Chalks and powders to brush through the coat remove dust and dirt while good old petroleum jelly can make a nose look moist and shiny. Don't forget the combs and brushes suitable for your dog's coat.
Starting with the head, you must remove the whiskers form the cheeks, above the eyes, the muzzle and the chin. Clip them with scissors very short so the judge will feel no stubble. Be sure the eyes and ears are clean and use baking soda to clean any stains on the teeth. Depending on the coat, there are sometimes cowlicks on the chest and other parts of the body. These can be camouflaged with thinning shears. Any stray hairs on the body should be trimmed one at a time. Take special care using clippers around the genital area. You don't want any nasty clipper burn to spoil the look of your dog. Besides that's pretty uncomfortable for the dog.
Moving to the tail area, clip any stray hairs carefully. Never trim the top of the tail unless there are stray hairs. Clip those one at a time. Ten days to two weeks before the show, use clippers under the tail in the direction of hair growth. By the time of the show, the regrowth will have a natural look. When you get to the feet, trim the nails carefully using a two step process. The first cut should be blunt as close to the quick as possible and the second cut should be angled. A nail file will smooth the edges for a perfect finish. Use scissors to trim the hair between the pads, and trim neatly around the paw with the dog standing flat.
Most of the fancy haircuts you see in the ring have been done ahead of time. They vary from breed to breed and need frequent touch ups. If you have everything you need with you, your dog will be picture perfect. Many people say if they look good they feel good and it shows in the ring. When you see the dogs prancing around the ring it will make a believer out of you.
