Pet Grooming Training

Is this article about training the groomer or training the pet to be groomed or both? I think I'll touch on both subjects because both are important. The training of the groomer is a no brainer. Go to grooming school or take an online class. The training of the pet, on the other hand, is a another matter entirely. Pet grooming training just might be harder than you think.

Start when your puppy or kitten is young and preferably tired from his exploration of the world around him. Start slowly and handle your pet, especially their feet. Brush them and simulatee nail clipping. Be patient because young animals, like young children, have the attention span of a gnat. My fellow southerners are familiar with this flighty insect. You may only be able to brush for a few minutes before your pet decides he's had enough and the brush becomes a chew toy. That's OK. stop and try again later. The same goes for nail trimming. If you do one nail at a time without a major meltdown, it's still a learning experience. If you avoid becoming frustrated and keep your pet from becoming anxious and bolting for the door, your groomer will thank you later. Keep your sessions short and frequent and your pet will become a well adjusted groomer's dream.

Ok, the pet is trained, so let's train the groomer. As I said, going to grooming school is the obvious choice, but there are other ways to learn. An apprenticeship with an established groomer is a possibility. You can start from the ground up or the bathtub up. You will do a lot of bathing and sweeping before you get to groom a pet. It's a great way to perfect your handling techniques before you actually get the pet on the table to clip. Veterinary hospitals are also a good place to get some basic skills. Many employ groomers and most all do medicated baths and dips. Clipping down the severely matted pet under anesthesia is also a frequent chore. It's a great way to learn basic skills. The sleeping pet does not wiggle and try to jump off the table.

Learning to groom by volunteering at a shelter is rewarding for you and the pets. The haircuts don't have to be perfect and the pets will love the extra attention. Remember, everything you do, even if it's for free, is valuable experience towards your ultimate goal. Cesar Milan started as a groomer and just look at him now. I'll bet when he was bathing dogs, the thought of becoming the Dog Whisperer and having a tv show, books and a line of products was far from his mind. The path to success is often a winding road, but if you are able to take every experience and learn from it, your chances of ending up where you want to be are so much greater.

However you get your training, follow your passion and enjoy the ride. You may not get fame and fortune, but you'll be rewarded with having a job you love. When you do what you love, work seems like play.
