Pet Grooming Jobs

Pet grooming jobs, to many people doesn't sound like a real work. For those of us who love animals and enjoy interaction with them, it sounds like a perfect job. There is something very satisfying about taking a neglected animal and making it shine. Even well loved pets need to be groomed professionally at times. People have increasingly busy lives and the professional groomer makes owning a pet easier. I find working around animals very soothing. I used to go the harness track on my day off just to bathe, brush and bandage the horses my husband trained. Something about making them beautiful and comfortable felt good to me.

Jobs grooming pets is not limited to cats and dogs. Grooms are an important part of the racing industry, not to mention the show horse circuit. This does not fit the typical pet grooming industry, but it's certainly worth mentioning. Grooms are generally assigned two or three horse in a stable and are responsible for all aspects of their care getting ready to race or show. Grooming is a big part of the job especially in a show horse stable. Trust me, bathing a horse is sometimes easier than bathing a wiggling little dog, and way easier than bathing a cat for sure.

Many animal shelters employ or have groomers who volunteer their services. Many shelter dogs and cats are neglected and in dire need of bathing and clipping. The handling and attention as well as the actual grooming is beneficial to the pets. The better they look, the more likely they are to find a home. You won't get rich doing this kind of grooming, but the personal satisfaction is great.

Certainly there are many grooming salons that employ doggie "stylists." This can be a lucrative job depending on how many animals you are able to groom in a day. Salon owners can pay their groomers fifty to sixty percent of the grooming fee. Add tips to that and you can make upwards of a hundred dollars a day. Not bad for something you like to do anyway. Dogs don't talk back. Owners are another matter but salon managers handle that end of it.

Veterinary hospitals often employ groomers. it's a great service to add for their clients and there are often cases of necessary clipping that are medical in nature such as severely matted pets who must be clipped under anesthesia. Some skin conditions require medicated baths and dips on a regular basis as well. Veterinary hospitals who offer boarding or day care services may also employ groomers.

Boarding facilities and doggy day care often offer grooming services. No matter how clean the boarding facility is, When a dog has been kenneled for any length of time, they smell, well, doggy. Some places offer a free bath as a courtesy after a long stay and others offer grooming as a convenience to their clients. How nice to come home from vacation and pick up a clean, sweet smelling pet.

Show dog groomers are in another class. They have to be highly trained in the cuts for whatever breed they are working on. A haircut or grooming job can make or break a show dog. They have to be perfect and represent the best attributes of their breed. If you are a perfectonist and thrive in a high stress atmosphere, this could be the job for you. An expert groomer is in high demand. Best in Show is one of my favorite movies and it pretty accurately depicts behind the scenes at a dog show.

Career groomers may want to open their own salon. It doesn't have to be a large operation. You can cultivate the kind of pets and clients you want and work on your own schedule either in a commercial space or as a mobile groomer. Just look at Cesar Milan. He started as a dog groomer and now he's the Dog Whisperer. He followed his passion to a rewarding and successful career and so can you.
