Online Dog Grooming Classes

How the heck can you learn to groom pets online? Sounds impossible, doesn't it. Do you groom virtual pets to get your hands on experience? I went on a little quest to see what is available to someone who wants to learn to groom, but does not have the time or the money to attend a fancy grooming academy. There are certificate and diploma programs available for those seeking online dog grooming classes. You've seen them advertised on those late night television commercials. Are they worth it? You be the judge.

The certificate program is a good choice for someone who is already working in the grooming industry. It takes about three months to complete and costs substantially less attending a school. There are finance plans available. The certificate program teaches anatomy and grooming techniques via CD and books. It also covers starting a business, client relations and many other things one needs to be on their own. There are no practical requirements because the person is getting practical experience on the job.

The diploma program takes longer, six months, and six months of practical experience. There are exams at every of stage of the course and often 24/7 tutor support. If you are currently working in another field and want to learn grooming at home, this is a good option. You can take classes and exams at your convenience, evenings, weekends, whatever works for you. The diploma course costs between $1,000.00 and $2,000.00 not including tools and equipment. This is still much less than attending a school. Typical school costs can be upwards of $7,500.00.

Sure, you can learn anatomy and basic haircuts from a book or video and learning basic business skills should be a snap online. All things said, you are still going to need some hands on experience and most of us do not have multiple pets of our own to practice on. Some established groomers will take you on as an apprentice. I learned some basic skills working in a veterinary hospital from the in house groomer. Expect to do a lot of bathing and drying before you get your hands on the clippers, but it is valuable experience as well. You will learn proper handling techniques.

Here are a couple of suggestions to get your practical experience. Many shelters have pets in desperate need of grooming. You can practice and the animals will be pretty enough to get adopted. It's a mutually beneficial situation. Of course, you could also practice on pets belonging to understanding friends and family members. I stress "understanding" because your first efforts may be less than perfect. Some people place flyers advertising their services at little to no cost and of course, stressing that they are learning to groom. It may be a good way to build a client base if you're planning to open a shop once you graduate.

There are a number of accredited programs to help you. Just remember, you need to be motivated and able to work on your own. What you put into it is what you get out of it. The harder you work, the better the results. If you are committed to it, you could be working for yourself or a grooming business doing something you love within a fairly short period of time.
