Grooming Books
Can you learn to groom your pets from grooming books? Well, yes and no. You can certainly learn the basics. While today's emphasis is often on computers, DVD's and videos, there is just something about opening a fresh new textbook that transports us back to a simpler time. It puts us in mind of the first day of school, however long ago that may have been. If you choose to learn grooming at home, books will be an important part of your studies. The hands on stuff comes later. Get your basics from the book. In addition it's great to have a reference book to help you when confronted by a breed you don't often see.
Stone's Guide to Dog Grooming for All Breeds is widely considered to be the bible of pet grooming. This book offers guides for all one hundred twenty-five AKC breeds as well as mixed breeds and cats. With its photos, drawings and charts, it offers a plethora of possibilities. A lot of us learn by reading and others find it nearly impossible to do so. For those people books may not be the answer. They may be helped more by videos and hands on training. My grandmother was one of the few of her circle of ladies who crocheted who could read directions and translate them into action. She was in high demand to teach her friends by demonstration of what she had read.
Other useful books touch on the side of the grooming business that most people don't want to think about. Actually running the business is not something most people are prepared for. A good, thorough business guide book can be your best friend. It will help you plan for the success of your shop and teach you to maximize its potential. If you will need a loan to start your shop, a sound business plan is a must. This book will also teach you to deal with the client. Client relations are of the utmost importance. They are the key to repeat business and referrals. Aside from that, record keeping will be an important part of running a salon and it will keep the IRS from knocking on your door.
Let's say you are not a professional groomer but have bought a purebred puppy and want some information on caring for his coat and doing some simple grooming techniques. The local library may offer some choices of books, but your pet store often has comprehensive books on each breed they sell. Not only do these little guides tell you about your puppy's personality and breed traits, but also basic grooming skills. Who knew? Books in a pet store of all places. I would be remiss not to mention all the books available online. Go to Amazon, order, and the book will be at your door in short order. You can even get used textbooks at a lower price.
If you are an established groomer, books and magazines will help you to keep current on the latest industry trends. Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy are staples of every veterinary waiting room. These magazines are not just full of cute pet stories, pictures and advertisements. Kind of like Playboy, they do have some valuable articles as well. Industry magazines such as Groomer to Groomer also will keep you up to date on all the new developments in the grooming world. There are many such trade publications available and you would be wise to subscribe to at least one. If you truly hate to read, by all means get yourself a video or DVD library and keep the books on a shelf in your shop for decoration.
