Pet Grooming Equipment
Dogs and cats can be wonderful companions, but there is responsibility for care to be considered such as pet grooming. Equipment that can make the process easier and less costly than taking your pet to the groomer is generally widely available and easy to use.
Depending on the type of pet you have, grooming equipment can range between one item to several pieces of apparatus. Cats and dogs are the most common pets that will require grooming.
Cats
Cats, for example, are typically self groomers. They still need some help from their owner, however. Combing your cat will remove loose hair lodged in their coat that they would otherwise swallow as they use their tongues to clean themselves. This can lead to hairballs. Combing out these dislodged hairs can save your cat the discomfort of these hairballs, and help to distribute body oils that will make their coats soft and shiny. Indoor cats will face the problem of long toenails if they do not have a good scratching post, so a pair of nail cutters is helpful to trim those sharp claws. Ear mites are a common problem with cats; one that can be readily dealt with by using medicated ear drops to clean away the black “coffee grounds” that accumulate in the ears. Although cats rarely need help cleaning their fur, there are hand wipes that can be used to rub along the fur to remove dust and dirt.
Dogs
Different types of dogs have different pet grooming equipment needs. There are several items, however, that are common for all types of dogs. A good brush that is appropriate for your dog’s coat is necessary to prevent hair matting. Long haired dogs will need more frequent brushing than short haired breeds. Certain breeds benefit from regular haircuts, so purchasing a good set of clippers will provide a clean and even cut. Dogs also have nails that will need to be trimmed; if allowed to grow unchecked, the nails can curve inwards and actually begin to pierce the soft pads of the underfoot. Dogs with long, floppy ears have more of a tendency to experience problems such as wax buildup, ear mites and infections in their ears. Using soft cotton, a commercial ear cleaning product and a deodorized ear powder, the dog’s ears should be cleaned and inspected on a regular basis. It is important to keep these floppy ears dry to prevent problems.
Owning a pet is a wonderful and enriching experience, as they become a part of the family. Just as a parent cares for their child’s grooming needs, so must they do with their pets. Making sure that they have the proper pet grooming equipment makes the job easier and less expensive than going to the groomer.
